Viva Christo Rey

I saw the movie "For Greater Glory" tonight and I was very impressed.  I have to admit that I know next to nothing about the events that the movie tells (except for a brief gloss over by a Spanish professor this semester.)  The movie opens in Mexico in 1926 and tells the true story of how the Cristeros fought to protect their freedom to practice their faith.  In 1926, the president of Mexico, Plutarco Elias Calles, begins a series of anti-Catholic laws that prohibit Mass services, enforces the deportation of foreign born bishops and priests, murdered members of the clergy, and destroyed churches.

I enjoyed the set up of the movie as it followed the paths of many characters until all of the characters converge upon each other as their paths cross in the plot.  I must admit that for a good portion of the beginning, it was difficult to tell the difference between some characters and know who was who.

This movie is violent and a tear jerker as it delves into sacrifice, faith, and freedom.  I found myself tearing up several times in the movie which has a run time of 143 minutes.

Due to my lack of knowledge of the events of the Cristeros War, I am unsure of how true the film remains to the story.  However, I liked how the story avoided a lot of cliches that a lot of historical movies have. There was some excellent moments of dialogue in the film and I highly recommend it.
